On the Beach
Madde Hell likes to relax with some good music and a good book when she's at the beach. Her beach bag is always stuffed with a few books and her iPod is never far, always charged up. There is something about the steady pounding of the surf that resonates within her and allows her peace of mind, something she attributes to the music inherent in water. It is rare that she goes to the beach alone, but when she does, it's because she needs some time and space to herself to calm down and get centered again. She digs her toes into the sand, closes her eyes and breathes deeply as she listens to the surf, until the storm within her calms.
Madde can be practical in many things, but she likes to look good and, in spite of being relatively quiet and modest, she deep down wants people to look at her. And this bikini definitely ensures she is seen, sometimes to her utter horror and rage when the attention is not welcome or too much for her to handle. Yet, she can't bear to get rid of it for something plainer, because she is wild and attractive under her plain-Jane "armor" and this is one of the ways she can confidently say that without Sailor Metal as the medium.
She is very careful to use sunscreen, not being the most sun-friendly person in the universe, and always brings something to cover up with when she's had enough sun (or enough being gawked at), usually a baggy, oversized shirt.
Madde is an adept swimmer and is fond of diving or digging to look for sea glass and other small treasures at the shore. She often saves some trinkets of the beach in a jar - bits of glass, driftwood, shells, smooth rocks and sand - and brings it back with her to remind her of the sea.
When she's with her friends, Madde will often hang back with their stuff. She tends to mother her friends, since they are usually irresponsible and forget everything important. If they are not too forgetful or wild, then Madde will relax more and eventually join them. On those days where they are worse, sometimes Madde is the eerie calm of the eye of a hurricane and may excuse herself to retreat to a more isolated part of the beach, before she unleashes that fury slow-boiling under her skin, something she would deeply regret.
SWIM SUIT/TECHNICAL NOTES - Sparkly and girly single-strap bikini with BLING, all to reflect that under that modest and quiet civilian surface, there's someone very confident, who does not like fading into the background and isn't afraid to walk on the wild side. As I said on her civilian entry, Madde is all about CONTROL - she rarely shows what's under the surface unless she wants to.
I deliberately set up this entry like this in order to show off some of the design details, such as the back having black cords instead of the sparkly chains used on the front, since that was an issue with the last entry's posing. Technically speaking, this bikini would have to have an internal underwire apparatus of some kind.
This isn't quite what I wanted to do. If I had more time, she would have been woken up by a sea monster, transformed into BEACHMODE Sailor Metal, beat it to death with a Nimitz-class destroyer, detransform, go on a walk through the boardwalk with her exploits as Metal on the news, and then end up finishing the day in a hotel room, glaring at Sailor Metal through the mirror in a moment of true dissociation - all to the complete lyrics of Turn the Page. I thought it might be a bit excessive for this/I have no time/I am mired in miserable work/ready to cry or pull my hair out.
Hence I went with this slightly more sedate, introspective version.
Turn The Page , by itself, is the quintessential "story of my life" for rock stars on tour. Madde Hell/Sailor Metal would both find it appealing, especially on account of how much attention Sailor Metal seems to garner.
The iPod in the first panel is the only thing not hand drawn in this entire thing - it was made after the fact, in photoshop, and if this file wasn't so honking BIG I'd have animated the text on it to scroll like the real thing.
The book she is reading is Grimms Märchen.
