There was a boy standing outside on one of the gargoyles.  His white cloak whipped in the rain, seemingly with a mind of its own, and there was something unnatural about the boy’s stillness.

“That’s Damian,” Father Todd said, following his gaze.  “He’s a dhampir.”

Tim had heard people whisper about them and seen some sparse notes in the books, but he’d never actually seen a dhampir before.

“You don’t need to worry about him,” Father Todd added, “He’s on our side, unofficially.”

Which meant that Father Todd had obviously never reported the boy back to his superiors in Section XIII and Tim would be expected to keep the secret as well, should anyone come snooping.

Tim sighed.  His life was never simple.
